Useful technology emerges from clear decisions about context, responsibility and the way people work. Three considerations for llm engineering.

01

Define the knowledge experience

Decide what questions the interface should answer, which sources it can use and how it should respond when evidence is missing. These choices shape ingestion, chunking and retrieval.

02

Preserve source permissions

Access to an assistant should not grant access to every document in its index. Carry source permissions into retrieval and test with users who have different entitlements.

03

Make quality inspectable

Build a small set of representative tasks and expected supporting evidence. Review source freshness, citation usefulness and failure patterns before expanding coverage.

Start with a workflow you can understand, observe and improve.

These are general design considerations. Implementation depends on the system, users and operational requirements.
